Some topics of the professor-led seminar include:
-candidates' concert programs and their artistic substance
-thesis-related questions
-the esthetic of jazz music in general
Candidates will present their research in introductory lectures, at least once a year. Led by the professor, the artistic study of musical form (live playing) centers around the details and challenges of the material of the doctoral concerts. Each candidate in turn will bring material (scores, sheet music, audio) relevant to the concerts they are working on at the moment to the weekly group sessions. Each week, one candidate will be in charge of leading these interactive sessions where all postgraduates together play the music, give feedback and discuss the material.

The objective of the course is to deepen the doctoral candidates' esthetic vision of jazz music, to develop their artistic expression and to help them identify their core research interests. After completing the course, the candidates will be able to narrow down their research area to the essential substance, select relevant material for the program of their postgraduate concerts, rehearse the ensembles required and they will be able to express the objectives of those concerts in writing. Candidates will also acquire transferable skills for expressing the artistic jazz substance of their thesis.

At least 3 places will be offered to the Open University. Open University participants will be selected for the course based on the background information provided in the application. In the application, the applicant will answer the following questions:

Tell briefly why you want to apply for the course/courses and (motivation) and what you expect from the studies.
Tell briefly about your background: studies, hobbies or work experience you have related to the course themes (e.g. studies at art institutes).
Also mention if you applied for doctoral studies at Sibelius Academy spring 2026.
