Introduction to Community Engagement

A student who has completed the unit is expected to:

• have an understanding of the multiple ways in which musicians and other artists can connect to community and contribute to society
• have acquired the basic skills needed for working in socially engaged contexts
• have an understanding of using music as a tool for intercultural communication and collaboration within community contexts
• have acquired the flexible musical skills needed for diverse community settings
• be familiar with a variety of workshop models designed to build creativity and collaboration in diverse group contexts
• have acquired the skills to lead processes that foster group cohesion and co-creation
• be able to take on different roles within the project, acting as supporting musician, collaborator, and co-leader
