Songwriting

This unit focuses on the relationship between words and music. Students are introduced via classic works to various songwriting schemes, structures, formats and styles and are instructed in how to start and flesh out a feasible song. The unit involves both independent work and group work, bassed on assignments. The unit requires a substantial amount of independent songwriting. In addition to practical exercises, the unit includes theory lectures exploring the various elements of a song and analysing their potential in depth while considering narrative and sharpening of expression. The unit primarily concerns the writing and expressing of lyrics in Finnish.
