Teaching creative improvisation skills in instrument pedagogy
The unit covers interactive skills, principles of group cohesion and how to teach these to students of various ages in individual and group teaching. The unit depends on group cohesion and effective interaction. A safe atmosphere will help students find new approaches to relax their music-making and to insert mental images and emotions into their musical expression. Inputs include stories, moods, images, poems, rhythms, movements, hand signs, harmonies and melodies.
The unit involves exercises in group improvisation, listening to others and how to teach improvisation sessions through various assignments.
Students create improvised performances in small groups using various approaches, applying methods learned and learning new, effective exercises for both individual and group teaching.
The unit also provides a foundation for classical improvisation, harmonious and free-tonal music-making and how to teach these.
Planning of instrument workshops and their application potential is also discussed.
The unit is suitable for students whose main subject is a classical instrument.
