Independent Laboratory Project Work or Literature Work in Industrial Management

Students enrolling in this course should have a basic knowledge of industrial management concepts and familiarity with research methodologies. They should be capable of working independently and managing self-directed study. Additionally, proficiency in academic writing and communication in English is required, as all reports and presentations must be submitted in English.

The purpose of this course is to offer independent project work conducted in a laboratory or real industrial setting or a literature-based analysis. The course does not include traditional classroom sessions; instead, students are required to contact the responsible teacher to agree on the project scope. The course aims to provide students with hands-on experience in solving practical problems in industrial management by applying relevant theories. It enhances students' ability to conduct independent research and develop problem-solving, critical thinking, analytical, and documentation-writing skills in English. The course also allows students to explore the latest themes in industrial management, including new business models, workforce transformation, AI, machine learning, robotics, biotechnologies, and IoT.

The course consists of two primary approaches:
(1) Project based independent work. Tasks of this type of work aims to teach the students how to solve practical problems in Industrial Management area by the application of relevant theories. This provides the students with the needed skills to successfully conduct projects in industries and services, as for example energy, manufacturing and innovative start-ups. The courses include real-life cases and optionally practical work in companies or university projects/labs. The course develops problem-solving skills, critical and analytical skills and documentation-writing skills (in English).

(2) Literature bases analysis aims to provide to students an opportunity to deepen understanding of the latest themes in industrial management, such as new business models and workforce transformation, advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, biotechnologies, and the internet of things are transforming manufacturing companies and business environment in unprecedented ways.

The course develops problem solving skills and written skills (English).

The course materials include books and scientific articles available on the Moodle page. Students have access to laboratory facilities, such as Technobothnia and Digital Manufacturing & Virtual Factory Labs, which offer hands-on opportunities to work with advanced industrial technologies. The theoretical resources include relevant frameworks and methodologies that allow students to connect their projects or literature reviews with established academic concepts.
