5 sp

This module aims at introducing the most central concepts and debates relating to social inequality, taking into account the history of ideas as well as current sociological research. The focus will be on understanding the main positions and debates surrounding the conceptualization, explanation and legitimization of social inequality. Central will be issues related to economics, culture and power, as well as their intersection with other axes of inequality, such as gender and ethnicity. The Western hemisphere will form the main frame of reference for this module, but issues of global inequality will be touched upon. Topics featured in this module also relate to the UN Sustainable Development Goals: in particular, issues related to equitable education (Goal 4), gender equality (Goal 5), decent work (Goal 8) and reduced inequalities between and within countries (Goal 10) will be discussed.
