Biochar – strategic potential for landowners to enhance crop productivity and support carbon sequestration

What is the strategic potential of biochar for landowners within the evolving landscape of EU climate policy and carbon farming initiatives? Biochar, a stable carbon-rich material derived from thermochemical conversion of biomass (e.g., wood chips, willow, hemp, reed canary grass), offers landowners a multifaceted tool for improving soil health, enhancing crop productivity, and contributing to long-term carbon sequestration. When applied to agricultural soils, biochar improves water retention, nutrient availability, and microbial activity, and acts as durable carbon storage. The poster has been presented in the ICS25-conference, 30.10.-31.10.2025, Kuopio, Finland.

In recent years, biochar production, as well as the modifications to different applications has studied widely. Multiple utilization opportunities for biochar have been reported, e.g. as a soil enrichment, wastewater treatment, biogas production, construction industry, as well as an additive in composting. One of the emerged questions is the role of biochar as part of the of carbon dioxide (CO2) removal (CRD). Versatile uses of Carbon- Local production in the green transition (The Era of Biochar) project has been studying the broad potential of biochar in the North Ostrobothnia region, Finland. Project is focusing on the cost-effective biochar production chain and practical experiences at reducing human-induced environmental burdens and creating new business opportunities, especially in former peat production areas.
