Political Economy of Sustainability

No pre-requisities are required.

1. You will understand the mechanisms in which contemporary economic system leads to environmental, social and financial unsustainability.
2. You will be aware of principles and solutions of alternative economic modes, including degrowth and circular economies.
3. You will be able to evaluate critically economic strategies, production structures and governance of businesses and trade in terms of the sustainability.
4. You will recognize the methods of analysis and design of sustainable organizations, policies and strategies.

Completion methods

The course is offered online in a MOOC platform for independent learning on a continuous basis. The course will be made available through the MOOC platform of the University of Bologna (Copernicus College). The course will be taken as a distance learning course. In order to receive the ECTS, students will be required to follow the full MOOC, and watch all videos. Students will be required to pass the 15 self-examinations short quizzes at the end of each module, and to complete a final exam (multiple-choice). Students can proceed with the MOOC at their own pace.

Assessment practices and criteria

The course is assessed as pass/fail.

The course assessment is based on multiple choices questions through which students will show that they are able to identify some of the major issues discussed by the teachers, as well as prove that they have memorized some of the information given.

Activities and methods in support of learning

-Student activities: The compulsory activities include: watching pre-recorded lectures, reading and analysis of academic articles and scientific reports, as well as solving simple exercise with statistical data. These activities help students attain knowledge in diverse fields of political economy of sustainability, to develop their own critical understanding of the problem, and to evaluate diverse solutions. They are also verified by compulsory multiple-choice quizzes.

Students are also encouraged to conduct on their own additional exercises, designed in a way to develop advance competences of: critical thinking and problem solving, searching for and managing data and information, short academic writing, and policy design.

-Each teacher’s module includes a pre-recorded lecture, as well as additional learning material: slides, lists of literature and videos, citations, or statistical datasets.
