Advanced English: Culture of Creative Writing (CEFR C1)

Prerequisites

The aim is for participants to develop English-language skills by

• practicing multiple genres of writing: creative nonfiction, fiction and/or poetry
• critically discussing each other’s writing in a workshop setting
• recognizing writing conventions and mastering the related terminology
• examining published examples of the genres being practiced
• discussing the cultural contexts of writing: ideas of authorship, language cultures, writing and reading communities, and evaluative criteria

Participants provide their writing to be discussed in workshop sessions. In addition, the teacher provides extensive instructional material and links to model texts on the course’s Moodle page.

Completion methods

The course includes 36 contact hours and 45 hours of independent work. Each participant practices and discusses creative nonfiction, fiction and/or poetry, and each participant contributes their own writing (two new pieces and one revised piece) in a workshop.

The Language Centre requires students’ active participation, which includes attending at least 75% of sessions and completing the agreed tasks in the time provided. 

Assessment practices and criteria

Assessment is based on the learning outcomes. Passing the course requires active participation and completion of the agreed tasks by the deadline. 

The course uses peer, self- and teacher evaluation.

Target groups

This course is intended for students of all faculties. 

This course does not fulfil the foreign language requirement in the Bachelor-level degree.

Periods I-II.

Recommended time or stage of studies for completion

After fulfilling the Bachelor-level degree requirements in English (Academic and Professional Communication / English Academic and Professional Skills). This restriction does not apply to Master’s and doctoral students.
