The aim of the course is to give the students a deeper understanding of animal law as a multidisciplinary field of knowledge.
After the course, the students will be able to:
- understand and relate to animal law and the protection of animals in relation to philosophy and psychology, sociology, economics, and biology (e.g. animal welfare and behavior),
- understand animal law as part of a social movement,
- compare different theories that have animated past and present debates concerning the use and treatment of animals.
The course will develop general skills as:
Communication skills: The ability to understand and express legal concepts clearly is crucial in animal law. This includes written (and oral) communication in discussing and explaining animal law concepts to others, which is trained by the different discussions/assignments during the course. This develops the ability to communicate and negotiate with others.
Analytical and critical thinking: Animal law requires the ability to analyze various theories, sources, and concepts, assess their validity and understand the potential consequences of different scenarios. This develops the ability to think critically and analytically.
Problem solving skills: By studying different multidisciplinary theories and sources in relation to animals, students have the opportunity to develop their skills in analyzing different topics and issues. This includes, identifying problems and gathering relevant information to find new solutions.
Independent work, ability to manage one's own work: the course requires independent work. This develops the ability to take initiative, organize one's work and work independently.
Time and resource management: The course assumes that the student must be able to manage hers/his time effectively in order to be able to finalize the course. This includes the ability to prioritize tasks and use available resources effectively.
By developing these work life skills, students not only gain knowledge about the multidisciplinary perspectives of animal law and animal protection, but also a valuable set of competencies that can be applied in a range of different professional contexts.
