Power Plants and Energy Economy

This is an advanced level course for the Master's degree, which requires knowledge of the course ENER2020 Teknillinen termodynamiikka before starting the course.

The course examines the fundamentals and structures of the operation of different types of power plants. The course covers the basic connections of steam, gas and nuclear power plants as well as the basic structures and operations of hydro, wind and solar power plants. In addition, the course covers the start-up, operation, erection and maintenance of power plants.
The course introduces the electrical systems of power plants and the operating principles and structures of key main components. The course assesses the environmental impacts of different types of power plants and examines the sustainability of energy production and related ethical perspectives.
In addition, the course practices process and financial calculations of power plants and compares different forms of energy production from technical, economic and sustainability perspectives.
