Fluid Mechanics

FYSI1170 Waves, Optics and Thermodynamics, 4 ECTS

After completing the course the student:

• understands the definition of fluids, understands system and control volumes, and can calculate free fall tasks
• understands the concept of continuous matter, is familiar with velocity and density fields, knows how to distinguish one-, two-, and three-dimensional flows, knows how to visualize flow, is familiar with stress field, viscosity, and surface tension, and knows how to classify flow
• understands basic equations of fluid statics, can calculate pressure variation in static fluid and hydrostatic force in embedded surfaces, can solve buoyancy and floating tasks
• knows the basic equations of control volume in integral form and understands Reynolds transport theorem
• knows the equation of mass conservation in differential form
• knows how to calculate the functions of continuous pipe flow, knows the mechanism of cavitation formation, is familiar with cavitation erosion and knows the effect of cavitation on flow in a throttle
• is familiar with a variety of common rail injection systems of diesel engines, fuel injection valves, high pressure components, is able to calculate the flow in the injection nozzle hole

Additionally, the course develops

• problem-solving and decision-making skills (evaluation of solutions and results),
• analytical and critical thinking (evaluation of solutions and techniques), and
• digital skills: the student learns to utilize the numerical computing program Scilab (modeling, calculation)
