Numerical methods to solve problems are considered both theoretically as well practically. During the course numerical methods to solve (systems of) equations, to interpolate and integrate functions and to solve differential equations are considered. The methods will be applied in exercises to problems in the form of small (Octave or Matlab) programs.

Students learn basic facts concerning numerical methods and software, they learn to analyse round-off errors, solve equations with fix point iteration methods, get familiar with interpolation and approximation methods, learn to construct Lagrange interpolation polynomials, cubic splines, and least squares polynomials, learn to solve linear systems of equations via their LU factorization as well as with iterative methods such as the Jacobi and Gauss-Seidel methods, learn numerical integration methods, such as Simpson's method, and learn to solve differential equations numerically with for instance Euler's method. During the course students learnt to use computer software (especially Octave) when solving problems in exercises. The course develops critical and analytic thinking, problem solving skills, and IT skills.
