Linear Algebra I

After the course, the student will be able to explain the concepts of general vector spaces, subspaces, linear independence, basis, and dimension. The student will understand the concept of orthogonality of subspaces and will be able to use the Gram-Schmidt process to orthogonalize a basis. The student is familiar with the projection and approximation theorems, can calculate the distance of a vector from a subspace, and can construct a polynomial of least squares. The student understands the concept of inner product spaces and will be introduced to the basics of Fourier series. The student understands the concepts of linear transformation and its matrix, and understands the relationship between the composition of linear transformations and matrix multiplication.. The student is familiar with the concepts of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of linear transformations, can construct the characteristic polynomial of a matrix, understands the concept of diagonalizability of a matrix, and is acquainted with the theory of quadratic forms.
