Fundamentals of Sustainable Digitalisation – Introduction to Regulation, Analytics and Security

5 cr

Face-to-face

Sustainable digitalisation refers to the human-driven digitalisation that takes into account information security as well as the legal aspects of digital innovation and the objectivity of data analytics. The course consists of three main parts that are sustainability, data analytics and machine learning, and cyber-security and privacy. Regulation affects all of these areas. To combat greenwashing - companies claiming to be sustainable when they are not - there is a plethora of new EU legislation aimed at defining and measuring sustainability. This legislation will be explored during the course.

Machine learning has revolutionised the world, and impactful real-world applications are being invented at an accelerating pace. It is used, for example, to detect fraud, recommend movies to watch and classify images. For some applications, such as recommending movies, it is not essential to understand the details on which the machine learning model’s prediction is based. For some other applications, however, this interpretability is crucial, especially when machine learning models are used in contexts that have ethical and legal implications. Therefore, interpretable AI (or explainable AI) has recently gained considerable interest in the machine learning research community. The course will also examine machine learning from the regulatory perspective.

Sustainable digitalisation relies heavily on secure data and information. Cyber physical systems (CPS) enable many existing and emerging digital innovations. However, CPS are vulnerable to various security and privacy threats and risks. The course discusses the fundamentals of information security and cybersecurity. Cybersecurity practices protect people from digital attacks that can seriously harm users and related businesses and ensure a cybersecure digital transformation. Legislation is also an important means of ensuring our privacy and cybersecurity.
