Karelian Dialects

Corresponding courses are 2121608 Karelian dialects and 2121615 Karelian dialects.

Study unit is available only in Finnish. Please change the language to Finnish in Peppi and read the description in Finnish.

Upon completion of the course, the student is able to

• describe the dialectal divide of Karelian and its history
• demonstrate the main dialectal characters of Karelian and differentiate between the dialects
• recognise the main differences between the standard languages developed upon the dialects
• recognise also the similarities with the dialects

The course develops the following working life skills: understanding Karelian speech (study mood 1); the knowledge of a Karelian language specialist on the differences between the dialects (applicable i.e. in language teaching, revitalisation and language planning); taking notes, handling detailed knowledge and differentiating the essential from non-essential, summarising content as independent text (study moods 1 and 2).

Time:
Mode 1) 4th period of the spring term.
Mode 2) the entire academic year, no predetermined deadline. If you want to complete the course in summer, arrange the details with the coordinating teacher by the end of May.
