J: Introduction to Empirical Juridical Research

Students who plan to take the “Empiirisen oikeustutkimuksen seminaari” course, should take this course first.

The student will

• know how empirical research on law differs from legal dogmatic research
• recognize the base of empirical research on law and the most common methodological trends (quantitative and qualitative research), the information interests and study designs of empirical re-search on law.
• know how to plan research based on empirical methods
• understand how research questions, data and methods form a solid whole
• identify the basics of data protection in empirical research
• know how to present their research and discuss it in a group (Mode of study 1)

The course content corresponds with the previous course 5311933 Approaches for Empirical Legal Research. If the student has completed the course in question, they can not attend this one.

Study mode 1 (in Finnish) is offered once in an academic year in the autumn.

Study mode 2’s assignments are graded once in the academic year, during spring semester. Students are advised to find their way to the course’s Digicampus and start working with the assignments independently at any time. The assignments are graded only once in the academic year.

This course is open to everyone. However, for doctoral researchers only the Study option 2 is open.

In Study mode 1 the number of students is restricted to 20 students. In Study mode 2 the number of stu-dents is not limited.

Study mode 1 is offered only in Finnish. Study mode 2 is offered both in English and in Finnish.
