Upon completion of the course, the student
- knows the main events of Karelian history and how they were significant considering the language
- knows the general outline of the historical stages of the Karelian language, how the dialects have formed and in which the regions they are spoken
- recognises the main characteristics of the Karelian language and can distinguish their various characteristics especially in comparison to the Finnish language
- knows the current status of the Karelian language as an endangered language and knows which methods are being used to revitalise it
- knows the main characteristics of aspects of the Karelian culture
The course develops the following work life skills: (mode of study 1) working in small groups, discussion and interaction skills, understanding spoken content, making notes, grasping large concepts, condensing information into own text; (mode of study 2) work and time management, using sources, reading scientific texts, independent searching of information and source criticism, writing coherent text based on read text, connecting own perspectives to read research data
