Description
Fluid mechanics and heat transfer
Working methods
Content scheduling
The course introduces the physics of flow and heat transfer. The focus of the teaching is on understanding the phenomena and using this knowledge in various engineering applications (pipelines, manifolds, nozzles, pumps, fans, insulation, heat exchangers, etc.). The course is divided into two parts, flow and heat transfer technology, and a separate midterm exam is held for each.
The course includes a lot of exercises (building a basic understanding)
2 laboratory exercises
The course will be implemented in the autumn term 2026, starting at the beginning of September and ending in December.
Student's use of time and effort
Student workload as a guideline 4 ECTS = 108 h
It should be noted that for some it does not take all of the aforementioned time to master the subject area, while for other learners the aforementioned time is not enough. In order to pass the course, you have to invest in learning the subject area.
The course lecture material is distributed in the ITS environment.
The student is responsible for doing the homework.
Participating is not enough to master the material management of calculus lessons, the tasks must also be done at home.
Completing laboratory tasks requires preparing the material in advance and understanding the subject. When the laboratory work starts, it is too late to familiarize yourself with the material.
Teaching methods
Lectures
and video lectures
In connection with the mini-tests, familiarity with the topics of the lesson is demonstrated, and the understanding of the topic is deepened with practice tasks.
When working in a group, you learn from a colleague and share insights, also between groups.
In joint calculation lessons, skills are honed with the power of examples.
Alternative ways of completing the course
Equivalent education acquired elsewhere that is evaluated according to the instructions of Turku University of Applied Sciences at the student's initiative.
The implementation in 2026 aims to implement several small intermediate exams, the passing grade of which is 1. In this case, the student also has the right to participate in the exam to be increased if he or she wishes.
In addition to the above, the exam options are 2 intermediate exams or a final exam
Exam schedule
The course ends with a final exam. Alternatively, the final exam can be taken, among other things.
- The lessons are tested with mini-exams, which, after passing, the student will receive a grade of 1 for the course.
- There are separate mini-exam sets for the flow section and the heat transfer section.
- After passing the mini-exams, the student can increase their grade with midterm and final exams. There are two midterm exams, one for each course section.
- Mini-exams or midterm exams cannot be repeated.
Retakes according to the revised general guidelines for Energy Technology.
The retake includes a final exam for the course, which includes questions from the entire course, both subject areas.
Retakes for the 2026 autumn course:
19.01.2027 and
09.02.2027
The locations and times of the retakes will be announced in the appropriate section of the ITS system.
