Online teaching, Introduction to Sustainable Journalism

The course offers a comprehensive overview of sustainability issues within journalistic media. It addresses various current phenomena, such as news medias’ economic crisis, it’s (digital) emissions, rise of AI, news avoidance, trust in journalism, systemic thinking and the call for equality, diversity and pluralism. In the course we look for tools to enhance sustainability of journalism amidst these major changes. We also explore the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030, aiming to equip the students to engage with these global challenges. 

The course is offered as MOOC studies. Degree students register for the course normally through Sisu. After completing the course, the students:

• can locate news media and journalism into the larger information ecosystem and democracy.
• are able to analyze and rethink traditional news values and newsroom practices and acknowledge journalism’s role in shaping society towards more sustainable future.
• are familiar to some working methods of socially responsible journalism (e.g. constructive, conciliatory, solutions-oriented) that engage with environmental crises, social polarization and diversity of social realities.
