Application of Economics to Health Care

After completing the course the student will:

• be familiar with key concepts and approaches to health economics
• know the basics of the main methods of health-economic evaluation and research
• be able to find and assess health economic literature and articles
• be able to evaluate the use of health-economic approaches to analyse the some of the strengths and weaknesses of different health systems

Organized in English every other year (in even-numbered years in Finnish and in odd-numbered years in English).

Evaluation criteria:

1 (satisfactory):

• can describe the main concepts and approaches in health economics
• can outline the main research and evaluation methods used in health economics
• can search for, and to some extent evaluate, national and international health-economics literature
• can to some extent compare the strengths and weaknesses of different health care systems from a health-economics perspective

3 (good):

• is familiar with key concepts and approaches in health economics
• knows the main research and evaluation methods used in health economics
• can search for and evaluate relevant health-economics literature and articles
• can compare the strengths and weaknesses of different health care systems from a health-economic perspective

5 (excellent):

• understands the key concepts and approaches in health economics
• can describe and understand key health economic research and evaluation methods well
• can appropriately search for and evaluate relevant health-economic literature
• can make considered comparisons of the strengths and weaknesses of different healthcare systems from a health-economic perspective
