Core studies
Core content
- Most common groups of the organic compounds (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatic compounds, halogenalkanes (alkyl halides), alcohols, ethers, epoxides, amines, thiols, thioethers (sulfides), carboxylic acids, acyl halides, esters, amides, anhydrides, aldehydes and ketones), their characteristic reactions and syntheses.
- Chemical structures of organic compounds (drawing the Lewis structures taking into account the valence electrons, formal charge, polarity of the bonds, partial charges of the atoms, and possible resonance structures) and their effect on the reactivity and properties.
- Drawing of the molecular structures in 2D and 3D taking into account the spatial arrangement of the atoms (perspective formulas).
- Structural isomerism and stereoisomerism (conformers and configuration isomers).
- Most common reaction mechanisms (electrophilic addition, electrophilic aromatic substitution, nucleophilic substitution (S
N1 and SN2), elimination (E1 and E2), nucleophilic acyl substitution of carboxylic acid derivatives and nucleophilic addition of aldehydes and ketones). - Drawing of the reaction mechanisms (using arc arrow representations for electron movement).
- Concepts: nucleophile, electrophile.
