Waste management and recycling: Regulation and organization of waste management

Waste management is one of the core services of municipal infrastructure and a central part of people's everyday life. Functional waste management system guarantees a comfortable and safe living environment and is also a key part of the circular economy. In the course, you will learn about waste regulation, waste management organisation and responsibilities, and waste collection and treatment methods, as well as consumer responsibilities and consumption habits. The course is related to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) #12 Responsible consumption and production, #11 Sustainable cities and communities and #9 Sustainable industry, innovation and infrastructure.

Key topics: Waste legislation in the EU and Finland. Waste Act and Regulations, waste hierarchy. Sorting of household waste: waste containers, collection points, reception and transport, responsibilities. Producer responsibility schemes and fractions subject to producer responsibility. Collection, recycling and recovery rates of wastes, waste recycling and energy recovery technologies. Food waste and losses, utilization of bio-waste. Construction and demolition waste, hazardous waste. Waste Center operations, safe treatment and disposal of waste.
