PART 1.ORAL HEALTH CARE (3 ECTS)
The importance of oral health and self-care for the well-being of clients of different ages. Key factors affecting oral health. Quality requirements and use of oral care products, oral care products and xylitol. Methods of assessing oral hygiene outcomes. Oral health self-care management.

PART 2. NUTRITION AND ORAL HEALTH (2 ECTS)
Associations of nutritional factors with oral health at different ages. The effects of different diets and eating habits on oral health. The role of dietary recommendations in guiding oral health care. The development of a nutritional history and its importance in the work of the oral hygienist.

PART 3. INTOXICANTS AND ORAL HEALTH (1 ECTS)
Promoting smoke-free lifestyles in Finland and the principles of using different tobacco products and e-cigarettes. The links between tobacco, snuff, alcohol and drugs and oral health and general health. The role of the oral hygienist in guiding the client towards abstinence. Use of guidance materials.
