This course addresses the design of scripting languages and their applications. Scripting languages can be used to manipulate text and data through subtle and complex coding to automate many tasks. Students will learn to write simple scripts to automate system administration tasks using appropriate languages. This course explores the nature of scripting, the role of scripting languages, introduces several popular scripting languages and their applications, and provides skills in scripting language design.

Students will be able to design and implement scripts using a scripting language (e.g., Python, Bash) to automate repetitive network operations (e.g., configuration backup, log parsing, connectivity testing) and perform basic systems administration tasks (e.g., file management, user account creation).
Students will be able to process and manipulate structured data (e.g., JSON, XML, CSV) and write scripts that interact with external services using RESTful APIs to retrieve, analyze, and post data.
Students will be able to construct and apply regular expressions to efficiently search, validate, and extract complex data patterns from unstructured text, such as configuration files, log entries, and raw web content.
Students will be able to utilize a version control system (e.g., Git) to track changes in their scripts, manage different development branches, and collaborate effectively with others on a shared codebase.
Students will be able to implement proper error handling (e.g., try-except blocks, graceful exit codes) and write modular, well-documented scripts that are resilient to unexpected inputs and system failures.
