Electrical safety regulations and standards, safety at electrical work, electrical safety in building and utility grid installations, control of electrical safety and related inspections. The effects of electric current on human beings, electrical accidents, risk reduction, and emergency guidelines. Electrical safety requirements for electrical equipment and installations, and for electrical work. Supervision of electrical works and operations, supervision of electrical installations. Structures and characteristics of electric systems in buildings and public distribution networks. Electrical installation methods, ambient condition classifications and installations in different conditions. Protection methods for buildings and public low-voltage distribution networks. Dimensioning of the equipment, conductors, cables and protection of an electric system. Fundamentals of the design of building grids and electrotechnical documentation of the plans. Requirements for and contents of commissioning, verification and periodic inspections of electric systems. The course focuses on the regulations and relevant standards in electrical engineering in the scope required for the electrical safety examination (2). The course includes generic training on safety at electrical work.

Upon completion of the course the student possesses the information required of a professional in electrical engineering about the electrical safety regulations, the main standards and procedures related to the electrical safety (e.g. SFS 6000 Series and SFS 6002). Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

understand the physiological effects of electricity on human beings,
act in the event of electrical accidents,
describe the structure and properties of the electricity distribution systems in buildings and in public distribution,
is familiar with the safety regulations and the related standardisation,
describe safe electrical working practices,
select the electrical equipment based on ambient conditions and perform the dimensioning for the supplying electricity distribution system,
describe and choose the protection methods for protection against electric shocks as well as the effects of overcurrent and voltage,
perform the dimensioning for the devices used for fault protection, overload and short-circuit protection as well as verify the operation of the protection in a TN system with calculations,
list the special characteristics of small-scale generators, power electronic converters and electrical drives pertaining to electrical safety,
design the electrical installation in a building and document the plan,
describe the contents of commissioning and certification inspections of electrical systems.
