The study unit focuses on women as objects and subjects of sacred texts, religious institutions, and religious communities in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The following key questions guide the course:

How are women depicted in dominant religious narratives, imageries, language, and teachings in the three traditions?
What (diverse) roles may women have played in the textual and institutional history of the three religions?
What are the commonalities and differences that can be identified among the three religious traditions in relation to women and their roles and what can be learned from such comparative approach?

The course will draw on textual and historical studies tackling the above-mentioned questions in the three religions.

With the successful completion of the study unit students will be able to

identify and describe some of the key roles of women in the textual traditions of three religions
compare how women are depicted in selected religious narratives and teachings shared among the three textual traditions
apply interpretive methods to authoritative texts
analyse modern debates on religion and gender in relation to the constructions of images and roles of women in authoritative texts
