Plant species in urban green space

Students should be familiar with key concepts of plant morphology and plant systematics.

Recommended prerequisites

MAAT-202 Kasvimorfologia ja lajintuntemus 5 op

or MAAT-207 Kasvimorfologia 3 op and MAAT-208 Kasvilajintuntemus 5 op

After completing the course, the student can:

• identify plant species common in cultivation or otherwise occurring in urban green space in the Finnish context
• understand the ecology, geographic origins, the current ornamental use, associated socio-cultural meanings, and key sustainability questions related to said species

Completion methods

Course assignments, species identification exam.

Assessment practices and criteria

Graded 0-5. The final grade will be based on course assignments (25 %) and a final exam on species identification skills (75%).

Target groups

Students in the study track Plant Production Sciences in the Master’s Programme in Agricultural Sciences, students in other Master's programmes with relevant background, open university students, exchange and visiting students with relevant background.
