TA1 Basics in Economics

This is the first course in Economics and does not require any prior studies.

After completing the course, students will understand the basic concepts of and thinking in economics, related research themes and findings as well as the functioning of markets and economic institutions. The course serves as a basis for intermediate studies in economics.

The textbook read on the course is either The Economy, produced by the CORE project, openly available in digital form at https://www.core-econ.org/, or some other basic economics textbook chosen by the lecturer. Additionally, material separately announced by the lecturer might be used in the course.

Target group

The Bachelor’s Programme in Economics is responsible for the course, which is part of the basic studies in the programme. Students of other degree programmes can also complete the course, and it is a compulsory part of the Study Module in Economics (ECOK-300). The course can also be included in the continuous learning selection of courses.

Timing

1st period, recommended to be completed during the first academic year. The continuous learning course can also be offered during other periods.

Completion methods

The course is organised as a lecture-based course, which includes compulsory assignments and a final examination.

Assessment practices and criteria

Quizzes in conjunction with lectures; the grade is based on a written examination and assignments. The course is assessed on a scale of 0–5.
