We study and guide learning the language using authentic everyday interaction situations and short texts surrounding the learner.
We practice simple social situations and transactional conversations.
We practice pronunciation from both phonetic and prosodic perspectives.
We practice simple ways to express opinions about everyday matters.
We study basic vocabulary for everyday life (e.g., describing things and feelings, studying, shopping, traveling).
We practice using and forming basic language structures related to the course topics.
We get acquainted with the main features of spoken and written language, with an emphasis on spoken language.
We practice self-assessment of our language skills and independent development of our language skills. We discuss language learning and related feelings and attitudes, as well as the parallel use of different languages in communication.

You can talk about your everyday life and a typical work or study day.
You understand simple spoken language and can operate in ordinary transactional situations.
You can distinguish whether events in a text/speech relate to the present or the past.
You can talk about past events.
You can make suggestions and express your opinion in a simple manner.
You can pronounce Finnish so that your speech is fairly understandable. You have developed your pronunciation.
You understand and can write short messages related to work or study day situations.
You are familiar with spoken and written language.
You are aware of typical features of Finnish everyday life and leisure activities.
You know different ways to use two or more languages in communication.
You can assess your own language skills and know how to develop your skills outside of the course.

Participation in teaching.

Evaluation Methods and Criteria
The course is graded on a pass/fail scale. The assessment is based on course assignments, possible tests, and participation during the course. The impact of individual assessments on the overall grade will be communicated at the beginning of the course.

Attendance
Successful completion of the course requires active participation in teaching.

Learning Support Activities and Methods
Written and oral assignments and reflection on one's own learning.

Target Groups
Optional for all students at the University of Helsinki.

Study Modules
The course can be included in the study modules SUO-1000 and SUO-2000.

Languages of Instruction
The language of instruction for the course is Finnish. The course is aimed at students who have at least the level A1.2 in Finnish.
