We study the language using authentic everyday interaction situations and short texts surrounding the learner.
We practice simple conversations and routine transactional situations.
We practice pronunciation from both phonetic and prosodic perspectives.
We study basic vocabulary for everyday life (e.g., weather, daily routines, times, leisure, expressions of time).
We practice using and forming the basic structures of the language, including quantification, possession, verb conjugation, and expressing place and time.
We get acquainted with the main features of spoken and written language, with an emphasis on spoken language.
We practice self-assessment of our language skills and independent development of our language skills. We discuss language learning and related feelings.

You can talk about your daily life.
You can participate in simple conversations with the support of your conversation partner.
You can operate in ordinary, routine transactional situations and inquire about key matters.
You can pronounce Finnish so that your speech is fairly understandable. You have developed your pronunciation.
You can find the most essential information you need in short texts (e.g., announcements).
You can describe everyday activities using basic verbs in appropriate forms. You also recognize past tense forms and can talk about the past using the most common verbs in their most frequent forms (e.g., olin/olit, kävin/kävit, menin/menit).
You can express possession and use locative expressions.
You are familiar with spoken and written language.
You understand better the key features of Finnish communication and etiquette culture.
You have the ability to assess your own language skills and know how to develop your language skills outside of the course.

Participation in teaching.

Evaluation Methods and Criteria
The course is graded on a pass/fail scale. The assessment is based on course assignments, possible tests, and participation during the course. The impact of individual assessments on the overall grade will be communicated at the beginning of the course.

Attendance
Successful completion of the course requires active participation in teaching.

Learning Support Activities and Methods
Written and oral assignments and reflection on one's own learning.

Target Groups
Optional for all students at the University of Helsinki.

Study Modules
The course can be included in the study modules SUO-1000 and SUO-2000.

Languages of Instruction
The language of instruction for the course is Finnish. The course is aimed at students who have at least the level A1.1 in Finnish.
