This course provides a broad introduction to sociolinguistics, the study of the relationship between language and society. It covers a wide range of theoretical approaches and research traditions, from variationist and interactional sociolinguistics to newer perspectives such as digital sociolinguistics and the study of social networks. Topics include research ethics and methodology, urban sociolinguistics, multilingualism and social practices, language attitudes and ideologies, globalization and global languages, language policy and planning, the sociolinguistics of education, sociophonetics, and style-shifting. Throughout the course, students will engage with both classic and contemporary studies and will gain hands-on experience in analyzing sociolinguistic data. Course topics may vary from year to year depending on current research trends and areas of emphasis.
