Sociolinguistics

Upon completing the course, students will be able to

• demonstrate familiarity with the major theoretical approaches to the study of language in society

• examine and critically evaluate methods and techniques used in sociolinguistic analysis

• apply theoretical knowledge and methodological skills to the analysis of linguistic data

• design and carry out small-scale original research projects in sociolinguistics

• present and report on their own research in clear and academically appropriate ways

This is an elective course, Master's level.

The course is available to students from other study tracks and other degree programs.

First or second year of Master studies.

Completion methods

Students are advised to take this course any time it is available.

Active participation in the course according to the specifications given by the teacher.

If no teaching event is available, it can be completed through supervised self-study of relevant literature and by conducting a relevant project work.

Assessment practices and criteria

Understanding of theoretical concepts will be assessed through a written assignment, such as final exam or learning diary. The application skills will be assessed through returned assignments on data collection or a report on a research project.

The grading scale is 0-5.
