Students will learn to talk about themselves and their experiences, discuss plans, exchange opinions and explore aspects of German-language culture. Topics include travel, Berlin, a multicultural society, professional life, wellbeing and future prospects.
Vocabulary and structures associated with these topics include reflexive verbs, the genitive, adjective inflection, the imperative, the zu + infinitive and the future tense.
Students will practise everyday communication in
real time, working in small groups and pairs. They will carry out discussion,
listening, reading, grammar and writing exercises, and complete a wide range of
independent assignments on the Moodle platform.

The course expands and consolidates language skills in a variety of ways.

After completing the course, students will

Understand clear everyday speech and the main content of relatively simple texts, such as dialogues and short informational pieces
Be able to produce short, simple messages or texts
Be able to express their opinions on familiar everyday topics
Be able to participate fairly actively in simple conversations or information exchanges using set phrases and routine expressions
Identify similarities and differences between their
own culture and that of German-speaking countries.

Completion methods

The course may be completed in several ways; please refer to your teaching group’s specific information.

The course includes 24–48 hours of real-time study in a classroom and approximately 60–84 hours of independent study. Students must participate actively in real-time sessions, attending at least 75% of classes.

They must complete the set assignments on time,
work in pairs and groups, and carry out substantial spoken practice.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment is based on the learning outcomes and covers regular and
active participation in real-time sessions (minimum attendance of 75%) and
completion of the set assignments. The teacher will give further details about
the written or spoken assignments required for the course.

Target groups

Students at CEFR level A2.1, students from all degree programmes,
international students, open university students.
