Latin America and the World

No prerequisites required for the course.

After completing the course, the students will have a broad understanding about Latin America’s relationship with other parts of the world especially with western powers in historical and contemporary terms. The student will understand the strong heritage of colonialism and imperialism in the region and their links to contemporary inequalities.

Specific instructions on study materials and literature will be defined in the description of the course.

For method 2 of completion, the student must agree with the responsible for the course about the literature for the essay.

Assessment practices and criteria

The course is graded on a scale of 0-5. Assessment criteria are based on active participation in classes, and the development of analytical skills and critical interpretation. Evaluation methods includes writing essays and oral presentations. The evaluation methods will be specified in connection with the teaching to be carried out.

Activities and methods in support of learning

Lecturing, active attendance to the lectures, readings, individual or group work, in-class discussion.

Target groups

The course is obligatory for Latin American studies’ students in the Area and Cultural studies master’s programme. The course is open for other study units in the master's programme in Area and Cultural Studies and other degree student programmes, but priority is given to students of Latin American studies.

Recommended time or stage of studies for completion

The course is recommended to be completed in the first year of the master’s programme in Area and Cultural Studies
