The course introduces students to how social and cultural anthropology, global development studies, political history, and economic and social history approach the dynamics of social change and its various forms around the world. It explores ways in which approaches and research insights from these disciplines can be used and combined to address contemporary local, national, international, and global problems.

After completing the course, the student will have research-based tools to perceive and structure political, social, and economic changes and development issues, as well as the historical and cultural diversity of societies. They are familiar with the approaches of social and cultural anthropology, global development studies, and political, economic, social history and the questions shared by the above. They have become adept at understanding the causes and consequences of local, national, and global conflicts, the distribution of power, prosperity, and welfare, and people’s experiences of and attempts to influence social change.
