Islamic Interpretive Tradition

This course will provide students with an overview of Islamic interpretive tradition. The term Islamic interpretive tradition here refers to bodies of classical Islamic knowledge produced with the aim of interpreting the two primary Islamic sources: the Qur’an and the Sunnah. The course will cover: Quranic exegesis (tafsīr); foundations of Islamic law making (uṣūl al-fiqh) ; and Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh).

We will learn about selected key issues and concepts in these different textual genres, and how together they constitute an epistemological tradition that has informed Muslim norms, values, and practices. We will also examine selected modern scholarship that has engaged critically with the interpretive approaches and methodologies of this interpretive tradition.
