History of Philosophy

The course provides an overview of philosophical currents in both theoretical and practical philosophy, from the pre-Socratics to the present day. Examples include the metaphysics and ethics of Plato and Aristotle, the Renaissance view of man and society, Erasmus and the Enlightenment thinkers, the metaphysics of Leibniz and Descartes, Hume's sceptical empiricism, twentieth-century phenomenology and existentialism, and the rise of analytic philosophy and the linguistic turn in philosophy. The course is a compulsory part of a bachelor's degree in philosophy but can also be included in the teaching degree and is also of interest to those who want to take a shorter basic course in the history of philosophy or supplement their education in philosophy or religious studies, or vocational training.
