Doing Ethnography

After completing the course, students have (1) a comprehensive overview of ethnography as a research approach; (2) a general understanding of the basic stages of ethnographic research; (3) first-hand experience of discovering a research topic that can be studied ethnographically, collecting empirical data, reflecting on the embodied and ethical aspects of their own research, as well as analysing and interpreting data and drawing conclusions.

Target group

The course is obligatory for the students in the Society and Change Bachelor’s program who have chosen Social and Cultural Anthropology as their study direction and optional for others.

Completion methods

a) A lecture course that involves written assignments, a theme seminar for small group. The course readings will be specified by the instructor. Required presence in 75% of the classes, compensatory assignments for extra absences.

b) A written exam.

Assessment practices and criteria

Scale 0-5. In evaluation all the assignments will be considered, self-evaluation will be recommended.
