Computing and Society: an introduction

Learn the basics on how computing has changed and continues to change the world.

Intermediate studies

History and current phenomena in information and communication technology (ICT), such as artificial intelligence, internet of things, big data.

Definition of computer science and its position among other areas of research.

Professional and scientific organizations in the field of computing; standardization bodies.

Information society: computing and democracy, social media, freedom of search, digital divide, accessibility.

Computing and sustainability.

Privacy and security: philosophical basis for privacy and security, risks such as privacy violations, computer crime and vulnerability of the information society, requirements for computing professionals posed by the data protection regulation, pseudonymization and anonymization of data collections.

Ethics of computing, including ethics of artificial intelligence: codes of ethics, some central ethical questions such as the responsibilities of professionals in the field and the importance of public interest.

Intellectual property rights as well as free and open source software and open data: philosophical basis for intellectual property rights, copyright, software patents and software licenses, trademarks and trade secrets, open data, free and open source software.
