European Integration: Theories, Approaches and Methods

The unit provides students with an in-depth understanding of the history of the EU and the developments in European integration. Advanced knowledge is provided by discussing EU integration in relation to specific fields, such as economic integration. The unit also provides an advanced overview to the theories and concepts of European integration and discusses the methodologies and methods used when studying European integration. It provides analytical tools to understand contemporary developments in the EU including disintegration and differentiated integration. Students are equipped with enhanced understanding of the ways in which the EU has evolved and the ways in which the EU works.

• The students will acquire an in-depth understanding about the history of the EU and European integration
• The students will be equipped with the key theories and concepts of European integration
• The students will have an advanced understanding of the methodologies and methods used to study European integration and the significance of these methodologies and methods to the knowledge produced about European integration
• The students will be able to reflect on and debate the different approaches to European integration and their relevance for contemporary developments in the EU
