Principles of Physical Chemistry

Recommended prerequisites: CHEM-C1220 Principles of General and Organic Chemistry

After the course the student will be able to

• understand the entropy and thermodynamical potentials, like enthalpy and free energy
• understand the thermodynamical efficiency of heat engines
• calculate the thermodynamic quantities of chemical reactions and to explain the chemical equilibria using them
• understand the phase equilibria of pure substances and to interpret simple phase diagrams
• understand the ideal and non-ideal solutions
• understand chemical kinetics of simple reactions and to solve the reaction rate law from elementary reactions

Registration:

This course cannot be a part of a BSc degree in Chemical Engineering taught in Finnish (Kemian tekniikan kandidaattiohjelma) A course implementation may be cancelled if the number of students enrolled to the course implementation does not meet the required minimum of five students. In the case of cancelled course implementations, the students enrolled to them must be provided with an alternative way of completing the course or be advised to take some other applicable course.
