After completing the course, the student
- identify linguistic sociological situations in which a minority language has become or is becoming endangered
- understand what endangerment means from the perspective of the language community on the one hand and the individual on the other
- know the means of preserving, revitalizing and developing endangered languages
- know what it takes for speakers to revive an endangered language
- is familiar with research on minority languages and endangerment and is able to apply key terminology in the field
- identify how his or her own perspective as a member of the majority or minority influences how he or she structures the position of linguistic minorities
The course develops the following working life skills: understanding of the social and individual significance of language (applicable in a variety of ways in the work of a language expert, especially in the context of language resuscitation); interaction skills, information retrieval and source criticism, presentation skills, creativity, use of presentation graphics programs (contact teaching course); reading a scientific text and writing a coherent text based on it (electronic exam); reading a scientific text, searching for information independently and critique the source, combining one's own perspective with the research data read and writing a coherent text based on what is read (essay); managing your own work
