The course introduces one or more types of journalism that emphasize the social responsibility of journalism, such as constructive journalism, conciliatory journalism, or sustainable journalism. The course explores the need and context for journalistic reform movements and how they complement so-called traditional journalism or challenge its principles, practices and working methods. The course identifies several journalistic reform movements and compares them to each other. The course provides a toolkit for practicing socially responsible journalism.

After completing the course, the student knows the basics of journalism's social responsibility theory and understands its connection to the emergence and practices of various journalistic reform movements. The student knows more deeply one or more types of journalism that emphasize social responsibility and recognizes connections and differences between them. The student gets skills to apply the principles of socially responsible journalism in practice.
