The aim of the guide is to improve patient safety and the interaction of care workers with relatives and patients when communication takes place in another national language. This trilingual textbook is suitable for independent study, but it can also be used as part of language studies in higher education. The texts of the book are in English, Finnish and Swedish. The book is accompanied by audio recordings in Finnish and Swedish (50 recordings in Finnish and 50 in Swedish). They can be used to learn conversations that are central to acute care. The guide has been produced in cooperation with Novia and TAMK's health care students. Funding: The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland's Hallå! programme. In the dialogues the main emphasis is on encounters with patients’ family members, and the communication with them. In the dialogues the health care providers ask the family members about the patient’s history, respond to family members’ questions, and they also reassure and comfort them when needed.
