Welcome to the Dance and Society course. Dance is not only art and expression – it is also a social phenomenon that is intertwined with power, identities and cultural structures. In the Dance and Society course, you will examine the role of dance as part of society and learn to analyze its meaning critically and in a diverse way. How is dance used as an instrument of power or as a form of political resistance? How are gender roles and hierarchies constructed through dance? And how is dance reflected in competitive culture and public debate? The course provides a deep understanding of the social meanings of dance and its political dimensions. You will learn to examine dance critically and express your views in a structured way, which strengthens your skills as a performing artist and a cultural debater. The course provides useful skills for dance professionals, cultural actors and anyone who wants to examine dance in a broader social context. The course is aimed at dancers, dance teachers, choreographers, students of dance and other cultural disciplines and anyone who wants to understand the social impact and significance of dance in greater depth.
