Course program Week 1 Introductions and Syllabus Week 2 Whiteness Week 3 “Racism? In Brazil? Who said such a thing?” Week 4 Resistance Movements Week 5 Black feminism Week 6 Afro-Brazilian religions Week 7 Where is the African heritage in the Brazilian cities?

Classes are engaging activities between students and Professor. Thus, the course will not consist of a series of straightforward lectures, but will blend short lectures with student discussions and questions (class participation). Students must have an active participation on classes.

Each week, students will read one or more texts (articles, essays) which will be discussed in class. All readings must be completed before class meetings. As part of this assignment, students should bring questions to collaborate to the discussion and a summary of key points to be discussed. Each student must come to class prepared to discuss the readings, and other assigned materials. After discussing the text, students will analyze different cultural productions (songs, poems, paintings, movies, news etc.…) in the light of the texts read. At the end of each week, students will write a commentary on the topic discussed and, at the end of the course, students will create a portfolio with their reflections, an artistic creation, and self-evaluation.

To complete the course, students must:

  • to be present at least 75% of the meetings;
  • achieve a satisfactory grade (minimum 1) in all parts of the assessment;
  • return all written and/or oral assignments requested during the course.

Assessment will be as follows:

  • 20% participation in class discussions, readings and assignments;
  • 80% portfolio.
