Social realities in the Global South
5 cr
Through lectures and jointly read and discussed journal articles and book chapters, the course takes a micro- and macro-perspective to the everyday life of people, and seeks to identify their links with wider political-economic processes. Proposed themes may relate to broader themes such as: livelihoods (including access to land, housing, informality, poverty, displacement, gentrification etc.); states, power and governance (e.g. local governing, bureaucracy, state rescaling); crisis and change (e.g. financialisation, authoritarian neoliberalism, climate crisis); movements (e.g. commoning practices, insurgent practices, right to the city). Themes are examined by linking recent research in Sociology, Development Studies, Gender Studies, Political Economy, Political Ecology , Urban Studies and Human Geography.
