Basic studies

Chemistry of elements:

  • Periodic table as the basis for understanding chemical properties of elements
  • trends in periodic table and their effects on properties of elements: atomic radius, ionic radius ionisation energy, electron affinity, electronegatiivity, the most common oxidation states, diagonal effect, inert pair effect
  • metal cations and oxoanions in water solutions
  • naming of oxoanions and the corresponding acids
  • acid/base properties of oxides
  • redox chemistry of elements: reduction potentials, Pourbaix diagrammes (E-pH), Ellingham diagramme
  • HSAB principle (hard and soft Lewis acids and bases) and its exploitation in predicting reactions
  • the most common forms of elements in the environment
  • extraction of elements, factors affecting the choice of extraction methods

Solid state chemistry:

  • chemical bonds in solid compounds
  • the most common structure types
  • lattice energy: definition and determination theoretically and experimentally
  • lattice defects and their importance
  • examples of materials chemistry

Coordination chemistry:

  • structure of coordination compounds: central atom, ligand, chelate, coordination number, geometry of a complex
  • naming of coordination compounds
  • isomerism in coordination compounds
  • description of bonding in coordination compounds with crystal field theory
  • reaction mechanisms of coordination compounds
  • organometallic chemistry: basics and most important applications
