This is an introductory course in maritime archaeology. Drawing on a range of case studies, this course provides students with a broad understanding of the extremely multivalent nature of maritime archaeology as an academic discipline within the sphere of human history and prehistory. The course integrates familiar and unexpected approaches to maritime archaeology and its neighboring fields with cases ranging from watercrafts to landscapes, from Stone Age to modern periods. It examines current but also past debates associated with definitions and theories, focuses on a number of practices, techniques and methodologies, and illustrates different research avenues.

The course is mainly web-based and comprises of thematically grouped online lectures. On the course, students explore the online teaching material independently and work with topics according to their own interest.
