Constructs examined include present tense conjugation, compound verbs, noun and pronoun inflection in the accusative and dative cases, prepositions, modal verbs and word order in main clauses.

The course is intended for students who wish to begin studying German.

After completing the course, students will

Understand slow and clear speech and uncomplicated texts on the topics of the course
Be able to communicate orally and in writing using simple sentences in everyday situations
Be familiar with the style of communication and customs of German-speaking countries
Be fluent in the basic constructs of German.

Completion methods

There are several completion methods for the course, see the group-specific information for a particular group.

The course includes 24–48 hours of real-time study in a classroom and approximately 60–84 hours of independent study.

Active participation: compulsory attendance (at least 75%)
Completion of agreed assignments in the time allotted
Mid-course and end-of-course examinations
Pair and group work
An extensive amount of oral exercises
Short compositions

Assessment practices and criteriaAssessment is based on the learning outcomes. Regular and active classroom attendance is required. The teacher will make a separate announcement on the written or oral assignments required for the course. Grading: Pass/fail.

Students in all degree programmes, students with a JOO flexible study right, international students.

The course can also be offered as open university education.
